Short History Lesson About Kettlebell Training

Kettlebell training is thought to have originated in Russia, at the beginning of the 18th century. Girya, which means kettlebell in Russian, appeared in the Russian dictionary in 1704. At first, kettlebells were used as weights to measure various goods, including grains. However, eventually the kettlebells were used by vendors during fairs and festivals. They were used to showoff their strength, so they should swing and lift the kettlebells.

Eventually, people started to realize the many benefits associated with using kettlebells. Vladislav Kraevsky, a doctor, laid out the scientific principles of this type of training. He introduced kettlebells to the larger public in Russian. At the beginning of the 20th century, strongmen and circus performers traveled the world and eventually they learnt about kettlebell training in Russia. The strongmen started to use kettlebells for both training and performance purposes.

Thanks to strongmen and others who showcased kettlebells, more and more people outside of Russia were exposed to them. However, kettlebells stopped rising in popularity during the Soviet revolution and both World Wars. Russian sports, as well as traditions, started to retreat back to Russia. In the former Soviet Union, the use of kettlebells still gained popularity. Eventually, training with them started to become very common among those in rural areas, as well as athletes. Olympic weightlifters from the Soviet were using kettlebells to strengthen weaker sides of their bodies.

The Soviet government realized the many benefits of training with kettlebells, so they decided to implement kettlebell training by establishing a commission to enforce kettlebell training for the public. This is when kettlebell training really took off. Eventually, kettlebell lifting was designated a sport, and the first competition took place in 1948.

Since then, kettlebell training has continued to rise in popularity, including across the West. Today, many people train with kettlebells. It's expected more and more people will express interest in kettlebell training, due to the benefits it has to offer.
