What Is The Origin Of Kettlebell Training?

Even though kettlebell training seems to have appeared onto the fitness scene overnight, this type of fitness training has a very rich history. In fact, the kettlebell is an old training tool that originated in Russia.

Kettlebells have been used for many centuries in Eastern Europe by both athletes and military personnel. This fitness equipment was also used by strongmen and wrestlers in the early 1900s. The FFC are now holding Auckland kettlebell courses teaching students all the fundamentals of kettlebell training.

Russian strongmen were also known as girevik (kettlebell man), and the Russian translation for kettlebell is ‘Girya’.

The one thing that has always been admired in Russia is physical strength. As a result, kettlebells became popular in villages and towns whenever there were social gatherings. Men would proudly display their agility, endurance and strength by using kettlebells.

During the 1900’s, the popularity of kettlebells did not increase in the west. However, in Russia, this activity did not only remain popular, kettlebell training became a national sport. In the west, gym training gained popularity.

Mainstream Popularity

At the turn of the 21st century, kettlebell training became mainstream and quickly became one of the most popular forms of fitness routines in the west. It is finding its rightful place the military, athletes, women, men and other fitness enthusiasts all over the world. There is even an active campaign for kettlebell training to be added to the Olympics.

This resurgence of the kettlebell is due to the efforts of flexibility and strength coach, Pavel Tsatsouline. He has launched several books on the subject.
